2010 Presenters

Dr. Brian Day
Brian was born in Liverpool and obtained medical and post-graduate qualifications in Britain before completing orthopaedic training at UBC. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Canada and England and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He holds a M.Sc. degree from UBC and in 1979 received the Canadian Orthopaedic Association’s Samson Award, for outstanding orthopaedic research in Canada. Dr. Day is Associate Professor in orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia. He has been a visiting professor and lecturer at many universities and learned societies around the world and has published over 150 scientific articles and book chapters. In addition to lecturing world wide in his area of specialization, he often speaks on issues of health policy. He is the President and CEO of Cambie Surgeries Corporation, a private company that developed the first facility of its type in Canada. MacLean’s, Canada’s leading news magazine, recently named him as one of 50 Canadians to watch and described him as “an iconoclast, whose time is now”. In August 2007, he became the first orthopaedic surgeon in the 140 year history of the Canadian Medical Association to assume the role of President.

Dr. Jack Taunton
Dr. Jack Taunton was the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. He was the CMO for Canada at the Sydney Olympics, two Pan American and two World Student Games and has worked with distance runners, cyclists, triathletes and other team athletes both as a doctor and as a coach. Dr. Taunton both co-founded and has a clinical practice in sports medicine at the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre, a world renowned clinical teaching centre. He was the director of the centre for 25 years and is a Professor in the Division of Sports Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. He is a competitive runner completing over 60 marathons. He also cycles and enjoys cross country skiing.

Michael Smyth
Nobody does politics quite like British Columbia. And nobody slices, dices and analyzes BC politics quite like Michael Smyth. As the province’s funniest, most fearless political commentator, Smyth cuts through the spin out of Victoria to deliver a fresh, provocative and hilarious take on B.C.’s political stirrings. A writer for The Vancouver Province, a regular on the CBC, a panelist on BCTV’s The Angle, and the host on call-in current affairs radio show Nightline B.C, Smyth knows more about - and talks more about - B.C. politics than perhaps anyone else.

Rahaf Harfoush
How did Barack Obama use social media to win the White House? Rahaf Harfoush has the surprising answers. For months, as a social media strategist for Obama, she helped develop the most innovative, comprehensive and high-stakes social media campaign ever conceived. Based on her extraordinary experiences at Obama headquarters, she delivers a riveting behind-the-scenes look at his new media campaign, showing us how to use online technologies - and the powerful ideas of community that animate them - to out-think and out-distance the competition.

Ross Davis
After graduating from the University of Toronto in Microbiology, and as a specialist in Physical and Health Education, Ross began a five year career as a Secondary School teacher. In 1976, he returned to his scientific roots with Merck Frosst, a pharmaceutical company in Montreal. His career continued through several corporations in the industry, most recently as the CEO of Pharmaceutical Partners of Canada Inc. Over his 22 year career with PPC he and his team have created the largest, and fastest growing generic injectable company in Canada. The highest recognition came this year, in the independent “Canadian Hospital Pharmacist Survey”: Over 1900 of his customers voted both the Customer Service and Sales Departments of his company as Number One out of ALL pharmaceutical corporations in Canada for the second year in a row.

Maureen Simons
Maureen Simons is a senior communication consultant in Hewitt’s Vancouver office and has over 25 years of experience in communication and human resources. As a consultant, Maureen specializes in helping organizations develop and implement communication and people strategies to support organizational and business strategies. She is a member of Hewitt’s Best Employers in Canada team helping clients achieve and maintain high employee engagement. Maureen is also a member of the International Association of Business Communicators and the Human Resource Management Association of BC and has held board positions in both organizations. She is a winner of several communication awards and a frequent speaker on strategic employee communication and employee engagement.

Derek Selinger
Derek Selinger is a born entertainer and has closely followed entertainment culture as it has affected communication, education and influenced business over the last decade and a half. His enthusiasm and passion come directly from several near death experiences he has faced and overcome in his life. “I learned at 8 years old that my mother was electrocuted while pregnant with me! When I learned of this miracle, I had two distinct thoughts. The first was that I had super powers (I picked up my first magic trick that year). The second was the realization, even at that young age, that my life is a gift!” Derek used that motivation to start speaking at the young age of 15 to audiences in the hundreds and then thousands. A college graduate, his balanced approach comes from investing years as an advisor in post-secondary education. He also played college basketball and later created winning teams as a college basketball coach. Derek Selinger has been the choice of corporate audiences on five continents for more than ten years. A winner of six international awards Derek has “wowed” royalty and the corporate elite; honing his skills as a first-class entertainer in front of millions all over the world on six major TV networks including the Discovery Network, Fox News in New York City, CTV and Global.
